RR#1 - The Chrysalids

The friendship between Sophie and David reminds me of a french book that I read in 7th grade. It was about a jew who was best friends with a non-jew (I guess we can call him that...). No matter how bad it got for his friend, the "non-jew" still wanted with the jew.

David never cared if Sophie had 2 extra toes. Like he stated, it doesn't matter what a person looks like, but what is on the inside. Not just the soul, but the mind.

We often judge a person by their appearences, and I don't find that very fair. The new kid walks in, if he's cute, everybody is trying to make him like them. But if he's not, well, nobody wants anything to do with him. Which is exactly what is happening in The Chrysalids.

I think that the fact they judge the people by their appearence is kind of dumb. Isn't the mind a lot more dangerous then the fist? I think they aren't really thinking hard enough. Because what if David and the 9 other mind communicators turn out to be more dangerous then a deformed human may seem?

Can't wait to keep on reading and know what happens next!!

Alicia,

This is an awesome response. It is short and to the point. You select something about the story to talk about, tell me just what is necessary and then connect it to real life.

The thing about the appearances thing is so true as well. There was a story I read once about a school that had two grade three classes. All the kids wanted to be in Miss Jones' class because she was so pretty. Her clothes were new and stylish. Her hair was always done up in fancy do's and her nails were always painted with bright colours.

Those who ended up in Miss Franklin's class were disappointed. She was short and mousy looking with frumpy clothes and grey hair. Once they started school they realized how wrong they had been. As pretty as Miss Jones was, she was strict and impatient. Those who wound up in Miss Franklin's class had the best year to date.

I love your final statement as well. The mind can certainly be a lot more dangerous than the fist. Ask anyone who has ever gotten into a battle of wits with someone who has a closed mind and a narrow vision of the world.

Great work with your responding this year. You are so well equipped to take on high school next year. I know I will hear rave reviews about you for years to come.
