Tobacco Commercials - Why some are Effective and Others not

Alicia,

You keep impressing me more and more with each article or respnse you write. There are so many things I love about what you have done here.

1) You took a hard look at each of them in a critical way. What's good, what's missing. I agree with most of what you assessed.

2) You looked at the practical and the emotional implications of each commercial and applied your evaluation of each to how they affected you, which makes it much more personal. Nicely done.

3) You tried to understand why some were more effective than others for you as compared to others. I think you nailed that one. I believe you are right about the fact that Drive was too funny to be taken seriously. And that the more adult ones will affect adults but that they don't really speak to kids in the same way. These commercials need to reach teenagers where they live (makeup, gross-out, shock value). Many of them do not react as emotionally to these kinds of messages as they do to blunt facts.

4) The fact that you did this voluntarily! Impressive once again!
